Pollards, are they out of vogue in the UK?

I may be wrong but it seems some people get a bit sniffy about pollarding.

Do tree officers brief against them? Hereabouts it's standard on nearly all limes and planes in public spaces, they look brilliant especially after a cut, and also in the first spring when starting to leaf. Much better than letting them get away and having to fell and replant.

Big pollards (mainly Plane) on most all over Central London and surrounding boroughs...i really like a freshly cut street.

Very satisfying...re-done every few years..

Clean shave I reckon. You're describing a "Seve tirant" or sap puller. Not needed IMO

I think they look great when managed and cut to cycle. I love the ones on the shores of Lac Lemman, and Annesy. In fact pretty much all over france as Mick stated.

 

We do a lot of repollarding on 200 year old lime trees when I am over in Oslo. To look at them you wouldn't think they were that old. They are cut on a yearly basis and look great when freshly cut.
