Would it be fair to say that the consensus is that the newer MS880s are not as well built as the 088s?

My MS880 lasted little over a year of light use, whereas the 088 (already 10 years old when it came to me) was hammered for 2-3 years without any issues whatsoever.

I was gutted when my 16 month old MS880 died on me after only about 40 hours work. The needle bearing had collapsed and the heat slagged the oiler. It seems to be just a plastic cage on the bearing whereas the Husky ones are all metal.

I think this has been a problem with other newer Stihls where this bearing has collapsed.

Is this the case?

Not had any problem with the bearing, but mine gets a grease now and then. I did have a problem with the oiler cog (plastic, doh!) stripping, but it was easy enough to push a new one on.

I'd milled at least 80 tonnes of Oak and Scots pine before any issues though.

That's pretty terrible for a £1k saw. Did go back to Stihl with it? I'd be pretty disappointed.

They didn't even tell me what went wrong. Just issued a credit note for a new one. Which I promptly got rid of!
