15 year dead standing oak

Is it best to remove any spongey sapwood before chainsaw milling? Should be easy enough to do with a drawknife and sharp spade.

I have milled 10 year old oak butts, turned out to be full of pinhole oak borer. No one wanted to buy the timber so took a pretty big loss...

I thought the chain might stay sharper for longer, maybe?... less crud to dull the chain.

I would have thought that removing the soft squishy wood would get rid of the majority of wildlife that wants to eat your timber, and less crap to dull the chain as mentioned above.

Will quite possibly be amazing timber , I once felled 5-6 big oaks on an estate, some were double cut on the 088 that had been standing 10 + years and it was all brown or tiger and worth a fortune or so I'm told ... We Swapped the butts for 8 arctics of beech fire wood and was told by another timber merchant we were robbed !!

I once milled a long dead oak for a customer with my Alaskan, we got some lovey dark brown boards which he was really pleased with.

If I were you I go and get it, the worst it will be is some half decent firewood

i may be wrong but the tree will only be brown if it was infected whilst still alive.

 

i thought the beefsteak fungus was symbiotic with the host and that further colouration would cease if the tree died?

Ok. It's mine. I will collect it at the end of next week and get some pics up for you all.

Think I will dimension cut the top and bottom and get some nice slabs of the middle. Be a good chance to tune up the lucas slabber which I've been reading up a lot on. The last time I used it on a 5 ft beech at 4 m long the chain was diving in the cut a little. The far end was 6mm thicker than the near end. Keen to get it setup perfectly.
