Rhody Bash and Burn

Have you been lighting your fires on the stumps to help deal with the regrowth?

Just back from the woods, all the cut stuff burnt now.

Did think about lighting fire at stumps but worried about peat fires at that area as it is a bit dryer than the burn sight I picked, the burn site was in a bit of a wet hollow. I did treat the cut stumps by drilling and injecting glyphosate and spraying glyphosate on the bits that were too small to drill.

If I had known about the peat soil I would not of suggested it, but I was thinking of doing it as a way to save time treating the stumps.

Good idea about doing the burn in a wet hollow though.

Still doing my annual rhododendron  bash with a few mates, just did three days of chainsawing the stuff with mates clearing and stacking behind me, found this interesting bit, no wonder it’s akward when it can grow in complete circles😀

As always continuing my constant battle but this week I got some professional assistance from man and machine courtesy of @AHPP who stayed for 2 or 3 days and achieved more in that time than I had in 2 or 3 years.

Great work done just ripping the rhododendron out by the roots and piling it up. From these burn piles I chainsawed out the main stems which were in the 3 to 5 inch diameter range and put straight into the trailer and then up to my firewood store, quick and easy cube and a half of timber for the log burner next year.

Going to let the new 3 big rhoddy piles dry out for a couple of months then burn them.

Gave 3 or 4 lumps of rhododendron to a friend of a friend who is into his wood carving made me a serving spoon out of one of the lumps, well pleased with it.
