What's the IVA ?

IVA = Individual Vehicle Assesment

 

 

IE a test that your self built trailer will need to pass before it is legal.

trailers are a bit of nightmare, to big, to small, to heavy. to lightweight..

the list goes on..

 

Then theres some new rules that mean you can't build your own these days, apparently if the trailer don't have a registered plate of some sorts, you might just get a fine as well as a trailer..

 

Just rip the plate off a scrapped similar trailer of the same weight - preferably from a european brand that wouldn't be recognisable in the uk. As long as the thing looks kosher (galvanised, breaks, everything in good nick) they hardly lightly to question it. Statistical probability of detection very small, I should think.

 

Of course, if there was an accident, and someone was seriously injured or killed, the insurance companies will tear the thing apart looking for a get-out. That might be bad.

 

Or you could do that test thing..... if your pal is a proper mechanic he should be able to swing it....

Not to mention the fact you may also have killed or maimed some poor bugger. That would also be bad.

 

Getting an IVA is simple and cheap, particularly considering what happens if things go wrong.

True, that would be bad as well....but if somebody did (heaven forbid) get maimed/killed, it would not be because of a defect in Flatyre's home made trailer, as he is a competent guy and wouldn't do something as reckless as take a shonkey trailer on the road...Would you, Flatyre?

 

Any trailer can degenerate to a dangerous condition regardless who made it and with the non existence of mot type test for small trailers (?) they often do....

 

But yes, I agree completely, if, as you say, the IVA is simple and cheap - and even if it were not cheap - it is absolutely the way to go, no question.

If loading mowers is one of the builds criteria`s maybe a tiltbed system like my IW plant trailer, its so quick and easy to load like this. I junked the hand pump and fitted an electric tail lift pump to it and its got a leccy winch under the front of the bed.

Talking of winches I want an electric one fit my trailer (15ft flatbed Brian James ) can you get them that plug into electric socket on back of the truck?

I think you'll probably need a 175 amp anderson plug running straight from the battery (with an isolator on route). I have one on my truck and it's useful for the ifor tipper amd winch.

Story of my life too! As soon as I find a solution it involves doing two more tasks....

 

In fairness it isn't too complicated. I cut up some long jump leads. Got some connectors for the battery then put together the Anderson plugs. Probably about £50 in parts.

 

Handy once you have it though. I change my ifor tipper so it runs off this instead of a battery. Plugs you can have a trailer mounted winch, small water/fluid pump, etc. It also works as a charging point.
