Large mill on small timber

Looking at getting Alaskan finally. But a bit stuck on what size to get . at the start I will be milling stuff around 15-30inchs as its a much more manageable timber size so would a larger 48inch mill be too cumbersome and awkward to work with on the smaller timber ?

I don't want to get to the stage in the future where I need to buy a second larger mill.. And have to buy twice

Thanks all

Arran

Get the biggest mate, you will lose 6" on bar length so a 48" should allow you to mill up to 42"

If you think you could need bigger I think they do a 56" one.

What saw are you looking to mill with?

880 would be ideal but a 660 will do you fine up to 30" logs.

20" with a 48" style set up is fine to use - plenty of stability there...

You can do smaller but it is a little cumbersome and inefficient - but not undoable.

It's a little like taking down a small tree with an over large chainsaw really!
