I have a friend that has a good size wlanut that is to be felled, they would like the stem planked so they can use it in the future, my question is though storage of the planks could be a issue as its just a plot of land and no real place to store other than out door under a tarp. would this be okish?

what would be the ideal storage be? would it be better to leave it in a stick and plank nearer the time it needs to be used ie 2 years time.

cheers

plank it, and stack it on bearers with stickers betwixt the boards then sheet or two of tin on top

This.

Now is a good time for milling as it will dry slowly through the winter and be less prone to surface cracking. Don't use a tarp as you want to leave the sides open to let the air through.
