Saw tuning

If its just 'tuning' rather than 'porting' then any dealer can do it, its not exactly rocket science.

The only complication is that there may be reasons for them needing tuning that may need fixing first, and really a service should be done before tuning.

Exactly what I was thinking Barrie, I do always dos full service/refurb when I port a saw to avoid any issues.......just for the record! Surprising the amount that have air leaks!

As you know Steve, I do not port. But I am always a bit cautious when a customer wants 'just a tune up'

Its no good attempting to 'tune' an engine unless the filters are clean, fuel pipes intact, fuel fresh, etc etc. So really a 'tune up' can only be done properly after a full service.

Anything else is really a bit of a shortcut and can result in tuning the mixture to compensate for problems which really need to be identified and fixed.

You would think so but I dropped off a saw at a local dealer with a good reputation once because I was flat out & had no time to look at it myself, asked them to replace the pull cord which was badly worn & do a full service as it wasn't running right. Took 2 weeks before I got a call saying it was ready, picked it up & they said there you go that's £80 BTW the chain needs sharpening & it needs tuning. I muttered various things under my breath paid the bill & took it home left it on the bench until I had time to clean the carb to resolve the running problems myself (clogged H jet). Never taken a saw to them since oddly enough.

I would have sked them what they had done exactly that cost £80 .....
