the ends of those beeches will be a bit spalted and discoloured but the wood should be fine. the oak should also be o if the heartwood was sound when the tree died. you don't have to box heart the oak. if it's to be used for structural reasons then just make it a bigger diameter beam.

Cheers for the advice, i'd like to hopefully make a few large posts from both the oak and Beech (maybe 7x7") and then the rest can be dimensional timber 4x2 4x3 etc etc. I'm not sure the best way to mill the logs for posts though? Just take one out of the middle and work outwards with whats left?

would it be best to quarter saw the rest of the timber into different

thicknesses then dry it and cut it to the size i require as and when?

That would hopefully avoid waste and to much movement when the wood drys.

If you have someone coming to saw them, hopefully they will have the experience of how to get the best yield. What sort mill are they bringing?

I think its a woodmizer lt40 not 100% sure if that is the model they've got but Its definitely a woodmizer.

I would of said the fungus will not effect the heartwood and it's probably sound.

Unless you specifically need box heart I would just cut normal posts. I don't know a lot about box heart but providing the posts you cut are fairly strait grain with no knots or shake they should be plenty strong.

With regards to the shake on the beech it is hard to know the extent of it, I would cut in to it and see, the chances are you will get some good timber and some will split...
