Belt/disc sander recommendations?

Hi all,

 

I hope this is the right section for this question.

 

I am looking for a good sander for sanding the end grain on log rounds that have been cut with a bandsaw.

 

The rounds vary from 2" - 6" diameter. So I'd need a combination sander with a 10"-12" disc and a belt of 6" witdth.

 

I've been using a handheld belt sander on its back, very slow and not what the machine was made for! So I really need a dedicated sander that can happily be running for hours without the fear of burning it out.

 

I know there's a lot of 'hobby' sander about for around the £120 mark but I'm looking for something with more power so it doesn't struggle or get too hot.

My budget is about £300, I don't need to buy a stand as I have a bench.

Danny, I think you will be looking at a good sized industrial unit to cover your needs, most light industrial stuff will be too small and certainly not rated for continuous use. I think a good second hand unit like a wadkin or similar but I think you may struggle to get a combination machine within your budget.

Ryobi belt sanders used to be good. I have 4" model that's been going well for best part of 20 years. Sanded whole floors with it without a hitch.

cheap angle grinder with sanding disk attachment. Aldi have them at the moment i think. if/when it fails, return and replace under warranty

For your budget, I would go for the Record Power disc sander.

It can be mounted on a bench & has a reasonable size disc.

As above, I think record do a 10" x 6" belt and disc Sander. 5 year warranty. I've got a smaller Clarke one that I've had for 8 years and just changed its first belt. But I'd be going for record next probably.

Have you looked at stand alone disc sanders. These would have a table and allow you to get a good finish on the end grain without worrying about holding onto the log.

Yes something like that would be ideal, I'm in London though so it's too far unfortunately.

Yes I had thought of that, my only reason for going for the idea of a combined belt and disc sander would be for moving through the grits easily, so for example I could have a 60 grit on the disc sander and a 100 grit on the belt, if I only had a disc I would have to change the sanding disc every time I wanted to change grit and as most of them are self adhesive I imagine it would mean destroying the sanding disc each time I changed grit.

 

Does that make sense?
