Since the last penalty was so important and decisive, and there was plenty of time for a good look at the video replays, should not old Joubert have asked for a bit more deliberation from the TMO?

That's the issue. It was such a crucial decision, that even Joubert wasn't 100% sure, he should have asked.

Common sense at last. He got it wrong, refs get it wrong all the time, they're not perfect. I can understand it sucks but it is what it is.

I have to congratulate our Scottish members on the phlegmatic way they've accepted the way the team were knocked out of the RWC.

Acceptance of the vagaries of referees decisions and the tumbling dice of sporting chance does you credit.

Other teams and supporters could learn a bit.

But refs used to be horrendously wrong in the past without the help of the camera and team behind it. Things have improved a lot.

Surely it just needs to be honed a little more in the right direction.

Can't this be extended to "Match winning opportunity" without much fuss?

 

There is no issue with breaking up the flow of the game with a lengthy analysis

as the game had effectively ended at that point.

I kinda agree and then I kinda don't. I think he should have had the option to go upstairs but he didn't so he had to go with what he thought he saw. That's not really his fault. I can also imagine that, if we start allowing refs to go upstairs for this and then that, they'll be using the TMO all the time. You should see the NRL. It's bloody awful. Two refs and they still get it wrong. Then they send it upstairs and TMO gets it wrong!

I suppose the other things is; the armchair refs will analyse everything. They'll be picking up the knock on five plays back or the missed foot in touch six plays back. Where do you draw the line? You'll always get someone who wants it taken one play back than where you have the line drawn.
