And there in lies the problem, nooobs on a course don't have time to waste learning the nuances of top notch sharpening

Get the pass then hone your skills

Fair point. I'd still say start as you mean to go on though.

Send a shame to use a chain that's effectively blunt out of the box!

I may be wrong, but I'm not sure you're using the right file (or the file in the right way)

This gives a good explanation.

I have bought my first saw: Stihl MS261 C-BM with a 15" bar.

I asked the dealer what chain is on it - he said "I don't know, it's just the one that comes with it".

I want to know as I have my CS30 test in 2 weeks and want to use this saw.

Kind of makes you wonder why on earth Stihl insist on machine handover when the dealers knowledge is so poor!

Should be supplied with a 3639 000 0062 chain which is full chisel 15 inch 0.325, 1.6mm clearly states that in Stihl catalogue. Can also be used with semi chisel chain, just replace first 4 digits with either 3629 or 3686. First 4 digits is chain type, last 4 is no of drive teeth,

Thanks for your help everyone, I am now much better at chains and passed my CS30 today.

The assessor commented on me always putting on gloves before touching the chain (as I had been taught) and said I didn't have to worry about that. He gave me plenty of time to do a good sharpening job - when he checked my chain tension he cut his fingers on it!
