I've always been told black!! What will black be then?? It's literally only when it's struggling never does it any other time!!

Under load black smoke: insufficient air (clogged air cleaner / turbo boost hose leaking / turbo fault) , over-fueling due to fouled or faulty injectors... Burning oil makes blue smoke not black. Knackered rings / glazed bores burns oil. :001_smile:

Cheers for that :thumbup1: so you'd go with one you have seen running? ?

It wouldn't worry me to use the engine that had sat in a garage for 16 years, I've a couple (RR V8 and pug 2.3 d which I thought may come in handy one day).

Which transit engine has a belt rather than chain? The duratorq 2.4 are all chains aren't they?

Agree blue grey smoke = burning lube oil or poor injectors black smoke over fueling or blocked air filters. Yes blocked crankcase breather can cause oil leak or force it down valve guides.

I'm going to put a new clutch in mine and get it looked at proper....I've already changed all the filters and changed the oil but seems it needs further investigation!! Thanks all who replied :thumbup1:

I think there is an adjustment on the pump on those, it turns opposite to what you think, ie to reduce fuel , turn it anti clockwise. If its opened out too much, it will black smoke, run rich and lack power. Could be the lock nut come loose, but we havent run one of those since 1999 so job to remember exactly, regards Mark

Yup i remember doing this :)

Hi Stewie, are you sure it's not a simple fix on your existing engine? Sounds like the butterfly (like in a carb) is sticking shut, mine did same thing when the linkage popped off, try fixing it in the open position with a cabletie.
