Do the sensible thing, Just bore round the cambium 3 - 4 inch.

 

Then bore two holes in the centre and we he's not looking fill it with semtex, though you won't need much. 250g of that good stuff'll bring down a plane.

Used this technique many a time with trees next to buildings and railway bridges

Dynamite was used at one time. My first employer in Cambridge had regularly blown up/out elm stumps that had succumbed to DED in earlier times.

 

Can you imagine providing the RAMS for blowing up stumps today:lol:

What am I missing?

Is the squared length a temporary handle to get leverage to rock the stump out or has he got a use for it afterwards as it is that I can't fathom?

Leaf blowers always handy to remove the loose stuff to see where the roots are. Done a couple with a pressure washer as well but was a bit messy.

Backpack blower, garden hose, slammer, tirfir and a good anchor and a few litres of sweat.

 

Or 3 x 3kg charges of anfo, (cheaper than powergel) lots of sandbags and some heavy water soaked blankets. You could up the charge but youd want to chain that stump to something!

dug out 5 large elm stumps recently, one of them was about 4.5' across when we cut it to ground level, others 3' plus. took about 1 day per stump
