Thought I would just add to this thread than open a new one.

Whats the lowest the blades can be ground down to? Don't want to send them off to be ground if there then going to be too small. The knifes width is 47mm, the width on top (where the bolts go through) is 15mm.

Hi spoons. Did a bit of digging with GM a while ago re the blades. The guy I spoke to reckoned you could grind them all the way back until the bolt heads became exposed, so loads of life left in them by that reckoning! The anvil has a lot of adjustment, so should be ok. I sent mine off to Saturn knives again recently, as my original GM blades weren't ground correctly. I specified 27 degrees on the front, and 10 degrees on the back angle over 4mm. They're in the machine and chipping well, with a clearance of 0.5mm between the anvil. I also had a set of new rotatech blades from Saturn, same angles, and they're awesome, but not cheap at nearly £200 a pair! Some companies will just grind the back angle, which leaves the front angle too short, and the edge of the blade doesn't come into contact with the wood first, hence the knocking of wood around and lack of self feed. Some grinders data states 15 degrees for back angle, but it's 10 according to GM.

Cheers for the reply Bob the Dog. Think my local place has sharpened them to the wrong angles again so im going to send them to Saturn. Hopefully they will do them properly. Will give them the angles in with the blades to make sure they do them to the correct angles.

Is it me or am I just not doing something right? Recently had my knifes re sharpened by Saturn Machine Knifes. Have put them on and adjusted the anvil so there is a credit card sized gap. Still doesn't pull the brash through as it should. I widened it slightly and felt slightly better but wont touch the larger branches, just rubs. Also when it pulls in the small material it doesn't seem as fast as what it used to be. Have sent an email to SMK asking them to tell me what angles they were ground to so hopefully hear back from them soon. Any ideas from you guys? Chipping is not fun like this

does the enjun sound 'normal' and is it revving out like it used to and is the drum rotating freely by hand ? Have you looked at the belts to see if they are split/worn loose or too toight ?
