I heat ours with a large outdoor boiler using a heat exchanger.

 

If you use biomass, private pools are not eligible for RHI, unfortunately.

I guess if it was a commercial pool it could get none domestic RHI.

 

What your mate could do is go for the domestic RHI, where they assess your home for its heat requirement and pay accordingly, he could then heat the pool as well, but he would receive no RHI for the heat used for the pool.

We use their 18 tube kit to heat our thermal store & provide hot water, works very well & the only electricity it uses is that to power a small pump
