Forst ST6 chipper bent axles

To be fair, the axle is a brought in component which is only supplied with a limited warranty at best, from the original makers. It is quite common for the owner to be asked to buy the replacement and retrospectively try to get the costs back through warranty. If the axle manufacturer cannot find a manufacturing fault, they would deem that it has failed through bad driving practice and therefore not their problem.

 

A warranty policy document and a good sales practice should make sure that what is covered, for how long and what the warranty procedures is, are an open subject with nothing hidden. No company would offer any kind of consequential losses either.

 

Surely its the fault of the manufacturer if they specify a crap axle which bends? Not the end user for simply using the chipper as it was intended.

got to agree there , surly an over rated axle is better than 1, that is running @ its limit ??

I agree also but it's down to what does the job and money,if said machine cost 500 quid more because it had a better axel people would winge as it cost more than the next machine, they all have to be competitive at the end of the day.

GreenMech built a test rig or rolling road to try out an axle. The unit recommendation for that weight machine did show signs of sag so we replaced it with an axle with a heavier rating for production.

 

But, again, an implied warranty is given by that supplier and we (and the end user) are governed by that. I have seen many machines of all makes that have been under maintained and used too hard by uncaring people.

 

The OP should have had his agreement explained to him at the outset and while I feel sorry for him, there is a process to follow which Redwood have to adhere to as laid down by their supplier.

I don't think it really matters on make,chipper axels are pretty much loaded to the max all the time so a smack off a pot hole will do some damage,I would always opt for a hd axel if it was available, I do agree with the comet above about owners driving and slowing down,I see some chippers almost bouncing down the road.

 

Yeah it's a problem knowing how they're driven. I tell my guys what I expect but you just know that if they're running a bit late at the end of the day, those speed humps & pots holes are forgotten about

 

I'll find out the cost for the heavy duty axles they offer and hope that they offer a serious discount on them. Seems pointless putting the same bendy ones back on!

I was driving it the day it bent and ime no boy racer. Its the fact that they dont say 'yes we've had a few problems with axles bending' so at the time you think you are the first to ever have one bend on you.

 

You don't mind the odd fault with new products as long as they hold their hands up and admit it to everyone, then get on and replace the said parts FOC

The Forst is a 950ish-kg chipper right? No compromise on quality of parts is what they told me at the APF...when you need a B+E to tow one, surely the extra weight wouldn't bother people who bought one?!

 

I've heard great things about the performance of Forst chippers, but having read this I'd not consider getting one as the roads around Sheffield are dire. The Timberwolfs I've used have always faired well though.
