Thanks Mick, that was what I was looking for

So your only interested in the responses that agree with what your suggesting with the amount of litigation Soliceters in this country is it really worth the risk of not using the correct equipment .

If you have an accident the insurance company will nail you if they can so its your neck on the line and for what not even £100

Bit sorry I even asked!

Why? No point in asking unless you either want to be told what you thought anyway or want to know the right answer.

Dropping and lowering on krabs and shackles will wreck or break a rope. You won't be insured and somene might get badly hurt. Buy a pulley. MIne cost £80, I have used it probably over 8,000 times, that's a penny a go. And it's still shiny, will outlive me for sure and will never ruin a £120 lowering rope. Saving me a fortune, it is.

is this going to be a temporary " get out of jail" method or your main day in day out method?? sure it will work and shackle wont break but will wear the rope and hockle it to hell and really reduce its safe working load, so over time i doubt you will save any money, so in short odd use ok long term use not a great idea, just my opinion mind and iam no reg coates in the rigging dept ( unfortunately!) oh and check out the "X" rings could be a perfect middle ground for ya.

If the rope has a separate inner core a shackle will soon knacker it as it would using natural forks in the tree to run the rigging line. What would the legal outcome be if you were using the natural fork method and something went tits up?

My guess would be multiple breaches of HSWA, including LOLER, PUWER and WAH. Basically not using industry best practices, and ignoring wealth of industry advice against discredited practices, But the lawyer in me wants to qualify that by saying that if you used natural fork as a one-off when no alternative was available you'd be OK but if you repeatedly used it you wouldn't be. And if your rope broke because you had knackered it beforehand and had't checked it was fit for purpose, you'd be busted.

So basically, is it worth the risk, for an £80 piece of kit that is tax deductible?
