I have been asked to quote to spray weeds on a gravel drive.

I presume I need a spraying licence?

If so where do I contact, how long does it take, and rough costs of course.

Any advice much appreciated

You sound like a complete newbie.

 

NPTC do the knapsack course (PA1 + PA6 i think)then you have a separate test later.

 

Cost of knapsack etc. Records to keep etc Might be cost prohibitive unless you are going to do a fair bit of this work.

 

DIY methods are sprinkling salt or spray with at least 5% acecic acid vinegar neat. See google for more info.

do you need a ticket for it? i guess for councils you do but private aswell.

is there more to it than mix per instructions and only spray where needed?

If spraying on any land other than your own you need PA1 and PA6, grandfather rights disappearing as well

PA1 + PA6 A allows for hand held spraying. Its a 4 day course and not worth doing unless you can generate enough work.

Spraying without a ticket will (eventually) catch you out.

Not worth the risk IMO.

they last for life. I spray about 1200 sites per year keeps me going for about 2 mths if all done at once. On a fixed price per site from postage stamp size to1 1/2 acres. You win on some not on others but averages out.

Don't sprinkle salt. It harms the soil. Saline soil isn't easily remediated and the salt doesn't allow anything to grow afterwards.

 

Glyphosate is degradable, so it breaks down easily.

 

On a similar note, I see posts on facebook from time to time advocating these home solutions for weeds. Most contain salt. They are supposedly a better alternative to glyphosate because big, bad Monsanto is behind round up. Salt is a much worse chemical for soil than glyphosate.
