Its upto 30% discount.

I was born into a council house and on saying that I have never agreed with selling them unless new stock was built to replace them, which of course never happened.

I did not know that the right to buy had been abolished.

Yep, it was abolished - I distinctively remember advising my parents to buy their council house (the one I grew up in) before they missed the deadline.

The main reason was because the monthly rent had been increasing (following a load of improvements/upgrades made by the housing association)....

So they took the plunge and dived into a mortgage.

The following year their rent would have been way more than their mortgage payments.

My family has never had money and still doesn't..... but the problem here isn't about buying a house at discount....

The real problem here is that there are alot of families (including working families) that simply cannot afford high rent OR high mortgage.

Cheers, steve

If Maggie hadn't done the same in the 80s we wouldn't be so short of social housing now. Bad idea imo.

Totally agreed with Maggie at the time (bought mine) but the outcome is that my village (along with hundreds more) is now not a village as I knew it. All the council house tenants that bought their houses are either dead or moved on, their houses have been bought by yuppie types that don't use the local pub (it closes). As for not enough housing, that's quite simple : labour allowed millions of eastern Europeans in to this country to work when we had nearly 3 million people on the dole??? now their children are having children= not enough houses.

Nice to have enough spare cash to go to the pub :001_huh:

Not true - free movement of workers is a key EU principle. Any UK government would be obliged to do the same, unless they chose to leave the EU of course.

I agree as that's a fact, but this is why this country is over populated and that's a fact

I agree Varty, That is also a fact, so too is the fact that fertility has risen amongst UK born women.

You are free to travel to any country within the EU & enjoy there health service & benefits system - what the Tories wanted - it's called the common market

Before 2008, the Yanks thought it a good idea that housing should be available to everyone, they lent money to people who, it was damn obvious, couldn't pay it back..............the catastrophic rest is history and led to the rest of the worlds banking systems going in to freefall as these house "owners" defaulted on mortages and then walked out on the debt leaving.....us to pay.

It is a bit brutal but some are destined to purchase their own house and some will only rent, that is how life is, you work hard, accumulate wealth and purchase what you can afford. If a Government reduce housing prices so the less well off can buy a house, it is you and I, the great tax payer that will subsidise this. When some have worked hard to get what they own, it sort of goes against the grain that others can get similar wealth the easy way!

I personally worked some pretty long hours 7 days a week for years to pull together the money to get my first house whilst others took the easy option, make it too easy and suddenly it becomes a right that others should provide and that is wrong and is a malaise that has unfortunately spread in parts of this society.

I think we all aspire to get on in life but it should come with working hard, being smart and not from free hand outs.

I think this is a bit of Conservative spin with a Labour type stunt:sneaky2:
