Fair point it's just not black and white as to who is to blame, the banks need to take some responsibility but so do the people signing on the dotted line.

Of cause the banks have some responsibility, but many are now claiming they are the only ones at fault, which is nonsense!!

 

Its not helped by the politicians using the bankers as scapegoats to side step their part in the whole sorry mess

TA your spot on that's the only way. But being in the industry at that time it was a joke and sadly it was allowed to carry on without check. Yes the regulatory bodies could of done more. And when the usual lending houses in the UK had no more money to lend Germany took over. In that August by the second week a lot of mortgage pulled their offers as they simply had nothing left and out of the blue DB mortgage came in and offered the customers even larger amounts. Most people won't know who DB are . They are Deutch Bank.

That's part of the problem IMO mate.

When it all became faceless and impersonal we definitely lost our way.

I agree with you Mark, you're absolutely right In the early days I always knew who my bank manager was and knew I could fix to see him when I needed to. I also trusted him and valued his opinion. The last, what ten years or so, thats all gone. To be fair I've been busy and not needed them, but thats not the point. it has all become impersonal and faceless and that IS part of the problem.

Yes and very good question. since it went t*ts up the FSA now crawl over everyone.

And you made a very good point about the banks conduct. Lots of banks made sure they didn't miss out on the misery. So instead of muddying their good name they set up lending houses in a different name. Principality bank was one good example. They are a trusted high street lender but they owned Nemo and those bar stewards were the worst scammers with PPI

Again very interesting RichieR - it does raise the question of which political party, if any, has a policy on banking that would prevent a repeat of 2008 (assuming that it might be possible for a UK governement to do that in a global market). Who do we trust on this one?

This one is gonna take a while to forget And policy's that should now be in place are for these dodgy payday loans who feed off the ones with the least money . Any party that claims they can make it better over night will probably encourage stupid lending to give people false hope again

I've stayed out of this thread thus far as I'm sadly far to bloody busy to have the energy to keep up with it.

 

As it stands, this is the way I see it (in a very simplified way):

 

Conservative: Better for business, harsher for those reliant on some form of benefit, a bit questionable on Europe (no ideal from my point of view).

 

Labour: Miliband has no credibility and I do not think anyone takes the idea of him as PM seriously. It's no wonder the Tories are focusing on discrediting him. It's like shooting fish in a barrel.

 

Lim Dems: No credibility at all after Con-Dem coalition (which I don't think has been a bad thing at all really - there has been a better balance to the Conservatives being in this time). Will lose huge numbers of seats.

 

UKIP: Like their position on defence, but I fundamentally disagree on exiting the EU, so hard to agree with them. Plus the misogynistic buffoons they put forward as candidates do them no favour.

 

SNP: Can't bear them. Not content with nearly dragging Scotland into the dark ages (they are very quiet about oil, now it's worth less than half what it was at referendum time), they seem to have convinced more than half the population that they're a good idea. I'm staggered at the support they enjoy. I don't see any redeeming characteristics, and Scotland is in danger of becoming a single party, flag waving bunch of misguided patriots. We need balance up here - an SNP majority up here would be like a UKIP majority in England.

 

The Greens: Anti business joke party. Promise colossal spending and funded how? By taxing the hell out of the people creating the wealth. I'm surprised at the support for the Greens on Arbtalk.

 

I can't comment on the Northern Irish or Welsh parties as I honestly don't know much about them, but that's my 2 cents.

 

Will probably vote conservative, which is a rather depressing (for me) conclusion. 20 year old me would kick 30 year old me in the nuts for that - I remember going around Manchester 10 years ago graffitiing Tory election posters. That being said, someone said to me the other day that if you vote Tory before you are 25, there is something wrong with you. If you don't vote Tory after you are 25, there is something wrong with you....

I think you will find a massive amount of people fall in this category which will be the downfall of the Torys come May elections ie The working poor.
