Ms 201 tank housing replacement

Have a leaking fuel tank, due to a crack on a ms201. Have tried fixing but still leaking. Does anyone know how easy it is to replace the tank housing

Have you tried cleaning and using a soldering iron to pastic weld dave?

It's not that difficult to change but it takes time and you do take a lot of bits off.

 

When you take the carb off take pics of the control rods, the same as you take the top handle off. Make sure you have a clear work bench and line the bits up in the order they come off and it makes rebuilding a lot simpler.

 

I've done a 201T and the husky top handle so far this year!!

I've had the carb off and replaced before, so that's not a problem.

 

Will look into plastic welding chris.

Chips away man who comes to the bike shop has a hot air gun with an attachment that makes a great job of plastic welding.

It's around £84 for a new tank I'd just replace it for piece of mind, plus you get a fuel lines breathers and a fuel cap with it. The new fuel tanks look like they have better heat plates on the bottom,mines fell off and the exhast has started to melt the bottom

Swale Scaffolding down at Gatherly has a plastic welder, give them a ring and see if Boris will do it for you.

I dropped the thing off a wall and the tank cracked along the seam. Also broke the top handle. Replaced the handle, hence taking carb out.

 

I've tried gluing and clamping but repair only lasts a few weeks. May have to go for the replacement option.

TBH, it isn't a bad job, just take note of how it comes apart and then it should be relatively easy to put it back together again....in theoy. Use your phone to take pics of any assemblies before stripping.

 

Avoid alcohol before doing the job...........don't ask:001_rolleyes:

I actually did a tank replacement today, took me the afternoon from start to finish taking it slowly and making sure I got it right. I did have the Stihl service manual, which cost about £6.50 and is worth buying to guide you through it step by step. The only specialist tool is the piston stop tool, though many use or prefer to use a bit of starter cord instead.

 

Good luck with it - its a good feeling at the end knowing its a new, reliable machine again!
