I had a Beagle many years ago, great companion, never on a leash!

If you can't get a dog to return/ stop on command, don't get one!!!

Fair enough mate like I said it's only what we've been advised.

Had terriers all my life never bad with children very obedient but little tykes for getting out and going on the hunt and not coming back for days.

Only reason mention the beagles was because we've been researching for our young family's first dog and want something good with kids we enjoy a lot of long walks and want something that we can comfortably leave off the leash. It would without doubt be going to a lot puppy training sessions mainly for the socialising aspect as this is as an important part of the training as much as stop/return.

Thanks for the comment would be nice to hear from any other people with experience with beagles.

Kind regards

Phil

Don't forget Border terriers. Hard as nails and soft as **** Mine goes everywhere with me. Travels well on land and water. He goes a bit DEAF !!!! if he's off the lead and gets the scent of Fox. Don't have kids, and he's never been a problem with my mates kids when they've been around. Being a small dog he's never been able to eat more than one at a sitting :laugh1::laugh1:. He's just as happy in front of the log burner as he is in the pouring rain killing vermin

Forgot to mention. I don't know where abouts in the world you are but Easter Saturday is the National terrier show at Bingley Hall in Stafford. It will be a good place to go and might give you an idea as to what will fit your criteria. And its free to get into.

My parents have a pure patterdale, it has never been worked properly, but it would fight anything, bark at anything, guard the house till death, and yet would be the softest, gentliest dog possible to my two kids, who have known it since the day they were born. It has never given me an ounce of worry towards my children.

We've got two borders. One is thick as sh1t and the other likes to pretend she isn't.
