Oak. Overrated or incredibly overrated?

don't see anything wrong with that mate, just make sure you get the fire very hot before you put oak on. i find that once its up to temp it goes great guns...

 

Fire never goes out unless we're away for two or more days. Had it on for 6 weeks solidly over Christmas

I have found dead standing oak to be slow as big j describes . oak cut green then seasoned for 3-5 years un split then split the summer before burning performs noticeably better . Still mix it with other woods though

No mate, Big J isn't saying that the oak is burning too slow, he's saying the opposite, its burning too fast and with very little heat.

 

Sounds like the comparison is mixed, green hardwood against dry, dead standing oak. If the oak is burning faster then that would make sense but it should be burning hotter

Never had oak be anything other than excellent firewood apart from being slow to dry.

I've found you can significantly speed up the drying time for oak if you split it into small logs - six months I'd say.

Perhaps your oak grows more quickly than here. I've never found oak to be anything other than a disappointing PITA. Genuinely, my favourite firewood is poplar, mixed with the standard hardwood mix from the field. Incredible heat off the poplar, good embers and even the firewood customers love it.
