High lift felling wedge question

I have just received a new hi lift in the post and wondered a couple of things.

Firstly, what are the holes in the side of the Aluminium part for? or are they just part of the manufacturing process?

 

Secondly, the ring is a bit small for the round wooden end, should I just bash it on, or shave the wood down a bit to make an easy on/off fit?

The hole to get the wooden bit out for replacement the ring should just tap on you are better getting two or three rings to save the wood part or go for the plastic parts from Clark's for them they last a lot longer and can take some beating put the rings on and put in water to swell the wood to keep them in place

Yeah, from memory they're 4 to 5 times more expensive, but easily last 4 to 5 times longer - worth it for not having to change the bloody things all the time if nothing else!

Think I might have to change when me wooden ones go getting fed up of changing the handles even have two rings on them

whats the best way to get the old shaft out the wedge?

What's best way of fitting the wooden shaft into the wedge got one today and looks like needs to go in a fair way?? You soak the wood or just keep hitting?

I put mine in the log burner for about 5-10 minutes, it's enough to get rid of the wooden section but not long enough to cause any damage to the metal section.
