There`s no way that my granberg precision grinder `ruins the chain`, on the contrary, it lets me easily take a technical approach to accurate sharpening, tuning tweaks and gets a very sharp result, but I think it`s still important to learn to use a file and the file guides are a help to a good result, not used the stihl easy sharp yet, but it looks good.

I class myself as competent with a handle file and no guide but on bigger bars the granberg grinder comes into its own for speed especially if theres a few to do at once.

Ive got a mate who only hand files and just uses a bare hand file without even a handle and has got a long standing knack of spinning the file as he pushes it thru the tooth (ie hes done it so long that way he doesn't even think to do it) and he seems to get it sharper than anything.

If you file a tooth then tap the file on the vise it dumps the filings out and helps keep the file cutting.a twist when filing is good if not turn the file between teeth to even out wear .

Got a Granberg Precsion which does the business. But it only gets used on either long bars or if I've really mashed a chain. Such as when I've located hidden top wire or overgrown stone in old wood/tree.

Other than either of these, I like hand filing. But then I'm not doing six saws at the end of a 10hr. day, six days a week. Having done metalwork in school & other various training after, I find filing easy. I know a person who didn't do any metalwork or engineering, sailed through a CS30 and still can't hand file a chain to a sharp state. Mind their chain is a Stihl PMM3; that's one small chain. Not saying I'd willingly let them loose on a chain I'd have to use though.
