Been out today, and been back and looked at a beech I noticed a year or two ago suffering. Took my new mallet for sounding out the stem :)

Its absolutely knackered, partially failed over a highly used area! informed people who needed to know.

Right over canal and people walking underneath it. the only bit seeming to hold it together is a bit of wood on compression side and a small bit going between co dominant stems (top left pic 4). where it attaches to the other stem its hollow says my new sounding mallet.

Heard about sounding mallets...are they anything special or just a wooden/rubber?

Homebase do a mallet one side rubber one side nylon for £10 - 15, they do the job lovely.
