Whilst I admit my error re the species I very much doubt it's hundreds of years old. 50/60 maybe.

I de-ivied an ash today, and not a particularly old one, maybe 18" dbh.

 

The strangulation in many places was very apparent, especially at unions. Some trenches maybe 3/4" deep.

 

Saying ivy is only harmful to trees in decline is totally wrong IMO.

Did the ivy make the craters or the tree grow round the ivy?

The ivy had spiralled round the limbs.

Whether the ivy had 'cut in' to the limbs is doubtful, but the end result is the same.

If I tie some wire round a tree, the tree will grow round the wire,causing strangulation. No one is saying Ivy has the strength to crush timber, but once it's around the tree it restricts growth causing strangulation, I've seen it countless times.
