hi response to eastwater im only going on the fact that i did a spraying course and someone from london came down to do it cause it was way cheaper,and that applied to all courses that duchy college did,but give them a ring and find out for yourself.

I am in the same situation as you (a good IT consulting job in the IT business), and I have recently established myself as an independent arborist in Denmark (www.omkap.dk).

 

I would say that the training costs are nothing compared to the costs of the equipment you have to invest in, if you plan to establish your own business. But the rewards are plenty.

 

To gain experience, I initially offered my services at a very low cost to other skilled arborists. Whereas it is not easy to get a job as a relatively unskilled arborist (at least the way the business looks right now), it is a lot easier to gein experience as a contractor - at least in my experience.

 

Congratulations with your new career, be prepared for the hard times ahead, but most importantly: Keep looking at the future

Hey bang on! For years I have looked out of an architects office window wishing I worked outside with trees. Just get on and make the change and as Arborlord says money does not guarantee job satisfaction. Worse was working with uni twits who ran indoors everytime it rained! I enjoy my work which involves a lot of skill, tenacity, fun, craftsmanship and appreciation of trees.

I earn less but you learn to see how thats in fact no so important. I am 50 in August and I will still be climbing, God willing, at 60! Fix bayonets and get stuck in!

I reckon the next time you have 2 weeks off maybe spent a week working with a local tree surgery firm just to see if you like the work. I know everyone else is saying go for it but maybe a good hard week would help yu make the decision e.g I'm never going indoors again or I'm never going outdoors again

 

It's a funny business that holds all of the usual ups and downs as well as the fact you tend to s@*t yourself now and again which is all part of the fun! One main point though is that you want to be financially secure going into it as you don't want the constant pressure of bills to worry about. Money wise I'd say it's the worst time to go into tree work.
