Bit big for elder althought the bark is right. Possibly Elm.

 

I thought they could be elm. I'll cut one, soon find out if its Elder that way.

Say what you want about the impact on quality of woods they have but woodlands.co.uk have a tasty business model. I'll be amazed if they're not trying it all over the developed world (now or soon).

Thanks Timbernut - I'm going to cut one and see out of interest. There a quite a few live ones too. I'm guessing that clearing all this dead stuff out, whatever it is, and making it into a woodpile for the mini-beasts is the way to go?

No mate, it's not. profitable though, I think their prices are outrageous, but they do sell (a false dream).

The best standing dead wood for habitat I think is the largest stuff if you have any . Of course it makes the best fire wood , especially if its Elm . Glad you don't see it as quite so neglected as you thought . That was my impression from the pics . I am envious bud . Super project to go on for generations . Never know after about 30 odd generations of your family it could be classed as Ancient Wood land !

I've no idea, if it's in the way, chop it down, if not then save the hassle & leave it?

Leylandii makes great fencing etc. Lasts a long time outside. So much resin in it. Useful for all sorts of things.
