How many of you sharpen a new chain?

wow i could hardly hold onto the 046, but it wasnt long till it was gone:sad:

 

without seeing your sharpening stevie, and assuming you didnt hit anything, id hazard a guess that you are cutting too deep into the chain when sharpening and making too mnuch of a hook....thus losing the edge quicker

Ok i have been a little sneaky, i admit.

 

What i am trying to do is show that sometimes quality of grinding, as matty says is not upto scratch. Sometimes theres a variation in manufacture in how sharp they are. Some saw guys are more than happy with what comes out of the box.

 

What my point is, is there is "sharper than new" and it is upto you guys to decide if you want to achieve this "true sharp" chain.

 

I am just trying to draw attention to a little more time spent in the workshop and preparation of your gear.

 

Believe me, just try checking the depth guages on a new chain before you run it, then have another think.

employed staff that thought they new better by taking the rakers extra low !!! then they **** a bit off lime stone good by chain hello more expence !!as for grinding chains if needs grinding it needs binning ,havnt used a stihl dealer to grind a chain for donkeys yrs as they made such a poor job of it & blued the chain making it softer !! that why i bye it by the roll & get it made up :001_smile:

might well be steve, its one of those things where you get shown the basics and away you go, i have worked for myself 95%of my chainsaw career, i can sharpen a chain pretty good, but i would give myself a 7.5 out of 10. there is only so much you can teach yourself. maybe i will get some pointers at justins from you...hell i may even learn something:001_cool:

Are you using a guide stevie? Perhaps the plate type holding the file.....

 

tried them all mate, but you know how it is, most of the time its down on your knees with a file with no handle in mrs smiths garden. i always give them a good going over in the vice after work or before, when its just me using the saw its fine, you get to know the chain and if you hit anything or how its playing, i have a lad just starting out on the saw, he usually tickles the tarmac a few times a day and its his job to sevice the saws and learn how to sharpen, so i let him get on with it, and as usual he is a bit one sided and thinks his sharp is sharp, which is fair enough as you have to learn somewhere, not making excuses for myself but you know what i mean. i would just love to be 15 out of 10. thats how i would rate the guy i used to work for. maybe he just seemed awesome because i had just started and my saw was permanently blunt.:blushing:
