Really should have looked more closely earlier but on starting to strip down found one top cover screw missing from carb and another slack:blushing::blushing::blushing:

All back together and sounding ok still to try it in a bit of timber but reasonably sure the cause has been found:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

NOT the easiest little piece of kit to work on but hey-ho

Cheers

Does the saw happen to be one of those with a EL46 carb? Those are known to some times act up, and soon was replaced with the EL48.

If the spark arrestor screen still is there, and haven't been cleaned regularly, it very likely is the culprit though. I always remove those, as there are no need for them here.

Don't know at the moment but will have a look soon - I have just been cutting some big knotty sitka with it and it is running like a pig - seems much better now revving freely out of the timber but dying once put under load.

I took the spark arrestor screen out and it made no difference - was not dirty anyway

Also today had the first refusal to start when hot - never been an issue up till now

Is the carb clearly marked with a number and if so where? If not how do you tell which carb is fitted?

I had poor running issues with a 560XP, it seized up in the end. Husky blamed use of 'inferior grade 2 stroke mix", I was using dealer supplied sthil red mix. Should use the Husky synthetic blue mix.

Jaso FD is what the manual states, Stihl red hp is jaso FC, or possibly worse!

If you used aspen, then it would have been a machine fault. Even Stihl say Stihl red is inferior for new machinery!

Someone needs to tell the dealers that !!. I use the 4L of red I had as diesel additive to lube the injection pump on my old MF135 and our bigger JDs, they do not like this new diesel without lube (Sulpher?) in it.
