Tractor blowing oil from exhaust

No idea on tractors but typical reasons are valve guides, valve seals, piston/bore wear, ring wear/failure, leakig gaskets or cracked head.

Common problem on old tractors on light duties; glazed bores. Give it some hard work; difficult if you just haven't got any hard work to do. You can get a local dealership to put in on dynamometer for a hour or two; wont cause no damage hard work is what they were designed to do; if it doesn't come right then suspect worn rings, valve seals or just worn out.

Whatever you may do to cure glazed bores it will go the same soon enough if put back on same duties; you used to be able to get deglazing powder which was mildly abrasive to pour down the inlet manifold of a working engine and some old friends have told me that they/others used to use washing powder. I haven't ever done it myself.

As above, the best cure work it hard for an hour or two. Dyno is ideal but pricey as you will have to pay for mechanics time. or load a trailer with a reasonable amount and find a steep hill and drive the tractor up it in as high a gear as possible a few times and see if that cures it!! Also check the crank case breather before and after and see if it improves.

Check oil then give it some hard work, big topper, rotivater, plow and make it work.

I have no work for it though thats the problem. it basically sits there all day powering a log splitter , every now and then it will move some ibc cages about. Can this damage the engine?

That won't damage the engine, but as others have said, the bores are glazed. One of my tractors had glazed bores, and I managed to "cure" it by towing a heavily loaded trailer up a steep hill a good few times. You must get the engine working really hard.

when I've had issues with larger excavators that smoke and blow oil due to suspected glazed bores, I have used running in oil very good success it has a additive in that scuff the bores. carry out a service run with running in oil for a few hundred hours service again run with regular oil.
