They're primitive trees with a requisite simple form; an upright single stem with all branches growing directly out of it in regular rings (whorls). Not a tree that lends itself to formative pruning. God knows what would happen if you cut the top off one: a new upright leader? Multiple leaders? Rot getting into the wound? I don't know but it would be wrong!

Now you know what it is you'll be surprised how many you spot. I really suggest not shoehorning one into a spot in which it cannot be left to mature.

I've been lucky enough to reduce one that had previously been topped, not big by any means but it had multiple stems at 15 ft or so and I had to get above them and bring it down a few feet.

Of course it was all cut n chuck, made a man of me. (Cough)
