Is this worth milling

I have and old dead oak been dead standing for about 10 years and got cut down this year at some point the trunk is about 50" across and about 3.5m in length. Is it fire wood or a new table??

if the wood inside is not soft then yes as it will look fantastic with the possibility of spalting...

 

do not fire wood such a large tree...

Looks worth a go to me, as long as it hasn't got any large area's that have gone soft.

And all the none durable sapwood has rotted away leaving all the lovely durable heartwood

I have milled quite a few long-dead oaks. Haven't had a bad one yet, even when left lying on the ground for a decade or so - a couple were damaged before they died, e.g. by lightning, but the rest was still sound.

 

There will be no sapwood left, but that could be considered a plus. You'll get several tables out of that! Looks like a good candidate for milling in situ with an Alaskan.

i taken four loads of fire wood of this monster all good and hard.

It would be a shame to burn it, would rod D come out and mill it. I will try and get better pics on Tuesday. we are based in Romsey, Hants

Worth milling, certainly. It's as much work to cut it for firewood as mill it, but you'll get an end value of £3700 as air dried oak boards (you'll need to air dry it of course) or £900-1000 as premium air dried firewood (assuming you'd get £100/cube for it).

 

A double ended chainsaw mill set up would get through that in a shortish day.

It looks a nice log but is there a soft bit in the middle? Hard to tell from pics...

Better pics of the monster. Points of veiws please. Is there anyone close by that would come and mill on site. You drive up to tree and work from truck. Need a price for milling works please.
