These vehicles shall be used only within a 50 (SOON TO BE 100) kilometre radius from the base of the undertaking, and on condition that driving the vehicles does not constitute the driver's main activity;

 

so this doesn't cover carrying wood chip or logs then? as its not 'materials for the driver's use in the course of his work.' its produce/waste

so a tacho would be needed for a transit tipper, chipper, carrying logs?

Different bit of leglslation; the letter refers to cases where a vehicle is pulling a trailer and the sum of the plated weights is greater than the gross train weight on the plate of the vehicle but the actual weight of the trailer is within this GTW.

 

Currently a tacho is required as soon as the vehicle combination exceeds 3500kg apart from a few exceptions. So currently a 4wd pulling a chipper 31 miles from base to a pruning job for the driver requires a tacho next year it will not and he can work further from base.

 

On the surface it is a hugely useful concession. I am not quite so happy about the prospect of 31 tonne ancient tractors and trailers with no vehicle checks running around.

The exemption I referred yo earlier applies the vehicles over 25 years old. OK for my lorry but not my LR.

That letter has absolutely nothing to do with tacho or licencing laws

 

That letter simply explains that a vehicle with a GTW of say 5000 can have a GVW of 3500 and a trailer MAM of 3500 but the actual combined loaded weight is restricted to 5000
