You local dealer may well make more profit on a discounted Solo than a RRP Stihl.

Solo are like Mitox- better than your usual Chinese junk, but still pants compared to Stihl.

I'd be going for an MS181 or possibly an Echo given the 5 year warranty for domestic use and recent positive reviews of their pro saws.[

Solo as far as I am aware are German made. The only connection with Mitox is potentially the same importer.

I was thinking the same thing. I have yet to have a solo land before me that wasn't a full metal chassis with good oilers. The 181's et al are plastic clam shells. Which Solo was the dealer talking up?

About long bars, I am of a completely different mind. Get a tad more saw than you need, and you WILL find a use for the entire thing, bar and all. You can over tax any saw, but the smaller it is, the sooner you will be over taxing it, and the less time it will last - especially if it's a consumer saw.

Shavey is quite correct.

Solo has been aquired by the german company AlKo who are currently sorting out all the small issues with the product before launching it in full next spring.

Alko is handled in the UK by Rochfords, who also have their own range of kit under their own brand name of Mitox.

This is the only connection. 'Solo By AlKo' has no commercial connection with Mitox.

Interestingly though, is that Rochfords have aquired the outdoor power equipment of Kawasaki which wiil be marketed under the Mitox brand next year.

So do not dissmiss the Mitox brand, some of it is genuine pro kit.

I've seen a Solo 646 with 18 inch bar, bag, gloves, chain oil and 2 stroke for sub £190, including delivery.

I don't need a saw but am tempted to buy one as a spare!

That right there is what the OP should be buying.
