Arborists experiences

I think that there is a great opportunity to educate the public about what we actually do.

95% of them think we are glorified gardeners, travellers or lumberjacks.

We've all heard it,

'£600 to take a tree down, that's ridiculous!'

'Ive got a tree that needs the top taking out of it.'

'Can't you just cut it at the bottom?'

'The nice men doing the drive next door said they'll beat your quote for cash if we keep the branches.'

Etc etc.

I'm not bothered about people seeing how I operate.

It's not always pretty, but it's honest.

I agree with you Mark but.....

I got stung on the face today and someone suggested orange was acidic so I rubbed a satsuma segment on it. Not good telly, and it didn't help.

Need something more acidic like lemon juice or wine vinegar. But this would only help counteract the effect, if you were stung by a wasp, as their stings are alkaline. Whereas bee stings are acidic and so an alkaline such as bi-carb/baking soda would help to counteract the sting, (aftering having first removed the embedded bee sting). But you have to know what stung you.

I think it's a good idea provided it shows professional people and not cowboys. Personally I think the industry is a mystery to most, we often get an audience and a lot of positive comments once people see the skills involved. It could be an informative behind the scenes look at the industry and might help improve our image as serious skilled tradesmen.

Agreed... And what agenda the programme makers have.

We had a newspaper article done on one of our rehab centres and they stitched us right up.... We did an interview and showed them round in good faith. The article showed us in a very poor light..

Needless to say, we're very careful these days.

Thanks, Timon

Thanks Mark - look forward to speaking with you!

We're definitely not looking to stitch people up! The doc will be about what sounds like a really exciting profession - sure, people will want to know why you chose a profession where there are such dangers involved, but more importantly it's finding out about great warm people, what it's like working within communities, responding to emergency situations... everyone cares so much about trees, I think this is a really good way to find out loads more about what goes on around them, what looking after them actually means...

It would be interesting to see such a program made, I would imagine the producer could find it a headache and joy in one, trying to filter out palatable & informative viewing from a bunch of rough R'sed don't suffer fools gladly semi lucid ultra sensitive miscreants the likes of which frequent these hallowed pages...but I digress, Mr Bolam, I think, is the perfect candidate, & offers a very realistic & holistic example of your common & garden tree worker, & the complexity or (lack thereof) of the daily challenges we face!
