Stihl MS241 CM

Picked one up today from local supplier to replace a 181CBE as a general back up and truck back saw. Did two sycamore jobs and good 16 inch cuts just to try out. What a great little saw. It's very light for its power and my other saws are Husky XP,s and 540 XP so used to slim and revvy saws.

Well on Aspen from the get go this thing has revved its heart out and pulled through some reasonable timber today. Still early as only six or so tanks through it but lots of wind blown tomorrow and might just give it another day out and leave the bigger rear handled saws in the back of the truck. Truly impressed and not a Stihl man through and through but mighty impressed so far:thumbup:

Took clutch bearing out tonight to grease just as a precaution and it was pretty dry, so glad I did this at an early stage.

Funny occurrence this pm. Local council had done a big Ash tree near to us and left timber on side of road for three days. Rang them up and they said " have it all, you will doing us a favour" Converted all to firewood and it all went to local old ladies to help them through the winter.

Nice to do a bit of charitable stuff now and again.

Taff

One of my favourite saws. I was running an 18 inch bar that it came with but swapped to a 14 and it's really fast and powerful. Lovely compact light saw for close woodland.

It won't have coped with an 18" bar at all well. I'left the .325 sprocket on and use a 12" bar; great little saw that you can swing about (!) all day without it hurting.

12" is on a 3/8 (picco) sprocket, not .325.

.325 is a stupid kerf for a small saw if you ask me. I agree, 18" would have made it suffer and defeated the object of such power to weight ratio.

Came real close to getting one myself. In the end, I decided that if I was going to have to lug weight around, I'd prefer the extra power, so got the H' 545 instead. But of all the saws on my shortlist, the MS241 C-M was the best balanced and best in hand. The 241 is so much more but basically it's an all day snedding weapon and not what I needed. Not sorry I went for the 545 but there's still part of me that hankers after an MS241.

First point - true. That's why my bar's 14", not 12"! :blushing:

Second point - stupid for me only because it increases the number of chains, bars etc I have to stock! What difference do you see between the 3/8" and the .325"?

Third point - I was surprised to even read of such a bar on the saw.

Cheers,

Jon

Wider kerf. More work on the (small) saw when there is no need IMHO.

I run the thinnest (1.1mm) Stihl 3/8 picco on my MS250 (12" bar), and run it hard. I've never broken a chain. I was felling hard old yews with it a couple of weeks ago and really pushing it. It just cuts so well with such a thin bar. Smooth, controlled and oodles of power.

All this talk of MS241s, I really want one! Power to weight of my MS250 and pro build quality :thumbup1:
