Both, it also depends on how good your throwlining is.

 

even if you got a line set first time, by the time you got the srt line installed and your gear on, anyone half decent is going to be spiked up and anchored on already.

 

not saying that means spiking is better....but if speed over efficiency of energy is is important then its spiking everytime

Your right steve spiking in general is quicker, like i said it depends on the tree, if i get my line set first time then i already have my high anchor and can begin work on the lowest branch and work my way up.

Even on takedowns I rarely use spikes until the final stem, much easier climbong without them. Srt or footlockign is a better way to enter the tree as it requires less openign and closing of biners. Srt is more efficient than footlocking. The gear doesn't need to go on the harness when not in use it can stay on the access line out of the way. Its the way forward for larger trees but not worth it for back garden jobs really, dependign on the back garden of course!!
