I am privileged to see and hear Spitfires on a regular basis . I live very close to Goodwood Airdrome were some ( 2 I think ) are based . They fly over me once or twice a week . Guy Martin is a top geezer . He once was asked on live tv if he had trouble sleeping the night before a big road race . He replied ."a couple of good wanks and I'm sorted " !

Black and white stripes were, I agree(mainly in an attempt to counter the 'if it flies, shoot at it' Royal Navy approach to AA defence), but one black and one white wing was standard during the Battle of France and early in the Battle of Britain when the civilians of the Observer Corps were a useful back up to the Radar stations.

Great program.

I did some work of a plane restorer in suffolk he show us around workshop. Had a hurricane being rebuilt at the time great to see and stand near.

I was pretty sure someone put a merlin engine in a rolls once so I googled it . I was right , what a beast

In 2010 I completed a Help for Heroes 350mile bike ride through Northern France - we came back across to Dover on HMS Largs Bay before coming ashore on landing craft. We were lucky enough to be treated to an air display by a spitfire whilst standing on the deck of the ship - it's fair to say the pilot got fairly close to us - here's a photo (absolutely unedited)

Great programme by Guy M. I was in a tower block near RAF Hendon years ago while a spit flew around below us. Can't beat that sound.
