Defender TD5 won't start. Any ideas?

Probably the contacts in the starter motor common fault go about every 80-100k you can buy the set for less than £10. Starter motor is a pig to remove so I rebuilt the start solinoid on the car. If it cranks over well but does not start I seem to remember the only sensor that stops it starting is the crank shaft sensor.

I've been away on my hols for 3 weeks and have just got back.

I went to pull my landy round to the driveway so that I could start loading it up for my next working trip down to Devon, but the bugger won't start. I get a clicking noise from the soleniod as if it is a flat battery, so I checked the charge, all fine. I've tried the usual, rocking it in gear, hitting the starter, nothing. I've now noticed that one of the relays under the drivers seat is buzzing when I turn the ignition on and sometimes for a few seconds after I switch it off.

Any ideas?

Get a Japanese replacement vehicle to bump start it

Same thing happened to my mates 55 plate defender while i sat in it. He's usually very mild mannered,but after much effing and blinding he whittled it down to the starter relay,which he replaced.

Then same thing happened a fortnight later,and after pulling out what little hair he has left,turned out the new relay was faulty as well.

Assuming you have a voltmeter;

What is the battery voltage before cranking?

Whilst cranking what does the voltage drop to?

 

Assuming you don't have a voltmeter;

turn headlights on. are they bright and steady or do they drop off (not literally!).

Ok so far crank it with an observer, what do the headlights do now?

 

Report back the results for further info.
