I've got this lump of oak to mill, it's 8ft in length and the diameter is just shy of 3ft. Not the best picture but it's shaped like a bridge with a gap underneath, it won't stay on its side due to the weight and shape. Am I best off planking it and having several different lengths or should I loose the first 6 inches. I'm new to milling and it's for myself so worst case it will be fire wood, but that would be a shame.

Any advice appreciated.

I'd turn that on its side and hold it with wedges, then as seventh said, mill it to give curved garden benches. Takes a bit of setting up to get the first cut done but the result is worth it.

I milled an almost identical log a couple of months ago, as recommended got it on its side with some wedges and got several benches out of it, well worth a goImageUploadedByTapatalk1407573578.539388.jpg.c65af5961db84c8583a6d26250ae618a.jpg
