Asked to dismantle a big ash for a farmer

Well the farmer isn't happy and I would trust him to know his kit and the ground he is pulling on, oh and I don't know what noise a caterpillar makes but is doesn't "meaoOW"

 

It was a play on the expression "Having a dog and barking yourself."

We felled a big ash in boundary of a site last year about 4ft diameter trunk and heavier branched on the garden side behind the houses, used wire rope attached to 20 ton digger came over lovely, then used his demo grab to move it in big sections to cleaner part of site for processing.

Couple of years ago I did just that.

4ft Ash, 25mm rope, tracked 500hp tractor= sorted.

Unless the ground is very mucky and slippery a challenger would pull over any tree given the rope is strong enough, long enough and set right.

 

As long as you can set the rope high enough without fear of snapping out the top it doesn't normally take that much to pull them over in my experience? We had a quadtrack though, not a challenger as 4 tracks are better than 2 according to the farmer.

Around these parts any big ash tree will almost certainly have significant rot in the centre, certainly enough to make me wary of attempting a fell as described unless I could make sure the road was shut off for the critical period.

 

As discussed above any big tractor with a decent rope will pull a tree over - but that is based on the supposition that it is sound at the base.

So I went to price a big ash 4ft across the trunk (big tree)

It hangs out over a main road I would say 60% of the weigh of the tree is road side and 40% his field side

He wants me to dismantle it

I took 1 look across the field at his yard and see he had one of these

I think that should pull it the right way what do u think

So, book some road space for half a day. Get the weight off roadside and then fell it into the field. If he has a big trailer you might be able to process straight into it from the tree so he can run it round into the field, tip and chip/burn later. That way you can clear off the road pretty quickly if required to ease traffic flow.

It has to be pretty wet to get the drive wheels to slip inside the tracks and it usually only happens in reverse. If your that worried just snatch another tractor on the front of the challenger (no longer anything to do with Cat btw). As a farmer myself as its been said if it can be done cheaper it will! Im surprised he doesn't just do it himself one morning before they go off combining! Ive pulled some big old poplars over with a 220hp massey with a lash up of all the chains and cable I could find about the yard. All you need to remember is once your committed don't hesitate and back off, give it all shes got!
