Hi-lift wedges

What's the best way of removing the wooden inserts in hi-lift wedges ?

If there's a bit of wood still sticking out, clamp it in a vice and knock the metal section down with a hammer and chisel.

If it's broken of flush, I've put them on the fire for 5 - 10 minutes and the wooden wedge drops out straight away.

Didnt know about the fire way of doing it, i had one break flush with metal and drilled the center out then used a small chisel to chip out the rest.

works fine with ally if you are carefull!

Drilling them out is a lot easier but since someone pointed me in the direction of the fiberglass inserts from Clark forestry I hope I won't be doing it nearly as often!

I put my ally ones on the fire. Worked a treat.

Saw it off flush(ish) with the ally, then drill a course thread screw straight into the cut surface, when it hits the bottom of the wedge it should just pop out, has always worked for me anyway

How do find the nylon ones? I found them ok except they absorb some of the blow and occasionally pop out (which is a tad annoying felling a big tree up a mountainside!) still better than the last two wooden ones which both split/sheared on first tree

Ain't used them yet as tend to use normal nylon wedges for most of my felling and only use the hilift occasionally, will let yous know when iv abused them.
