Buying a land rover discovery

Broken keyboard has lead to a nonsensical title. Off to look at a Land-Rover Discovery TD5 tomorrow. Anything to look out for. Are they best avoided or are they ok?

 

Always been a Navara man but my current one is nothing but trouble. What are they like on fuel?

Like any lr, keep up on servicing, they are at an age where parts are reasonable,readily available,and if you have any modicum of "spannerology" then you can do it all yourself, things to look out for on body are corrosion around windscreen, also doors and rear doorframe top and bottom, chassis ….well thats self explanatory, but especially rear end as the oil leaks don't protect that end so much:001_rolleyes:

Drivetrain, slack in system when taking off….. if it clunks…… Badly that is then start with "diff play" and work your way towards transfer box….

but lets face it they are the same set up as the defender but higher ratios, so loads of room for tweaking all aspects, if you find it a bit of a struggle towing,throw in a defender transfer box…… they take a beating like the defender but in comfort, economy 18-28 mpg if you are lucky….. i often get 13 towing...:blushing:

Could be jumping from the frying pan in to the fire!! It's a Land Rover - it will be great off road and at towing but why do you think there are so many parts manufacturers and distributors. Have a look on one of the Land Rover forums for the three amigos - three warning lights on dash that are regular problems. I know ABS is one, cannot remember the other two. Check chassis condition as well for rust. I know on TD5 90 they say to disconnect wiring loom where it connects to ECU and check for oil coming down the wires - could be same on Discovery. at the end of the day there are loads out there so take your time.

I like ours, it's pretty good off road, it does a long journey in comfort, you can seat 7 in it (albeit at a squeeze), fold the seats down and there's loads of space, it tows well.

 

That said, it has to be serviced regularly and it's had a bit of money spent on suspension and steering recently. All the points mentioned in previous posts are valid too.

 

Bear in mind that the newest Td5 you'll look at is 10 years old now, there are probably bound to be a few parts needing maintained. Our current one is 15 years old, but still good to drive and got a bit of life left in it. MPG-wise it will do 25 - 31, 31 only on a good long run with little weight an no trailer.

your right rovers 90….injector loom is a service item… not expensive, but often over looked, abs is a pain…won't own anything with abs…. lethal off road for towing… and very problematic if you spend a lot of time in mud….

 

Hi SW I had a 90 with ABS night mere when it worked it was ok as the 90 td5 was remap to 200hp and the ABS done track control to in the wet on the road if it worked it was good as the TD5 had loads of power thanks Jon
