woodland Trust and Ikea

Given Woodland Trust's role in Environmental Conservation and woodland protection i'm a little bewildered to see that the community/school tree give away has as a funding partner IKEA. This is a company who after all have been widely condemned for felling Ancient Forest in Russia, obliterating established eco systems to make furniture. Thoughts please:confused1:

Wrecking ancient woodlands is bad, (if that's what they did) not taking funding for new trees is worse.

Taking the money wont make Ikea cut down more ancient woods but it will mean more trees can be planted

i agree not planting trees is definately bad. but is complicated isn't it cos if IKEA essential are endorsed by woodland trust and this restores peoples faith in them and its just a joke PR stunt that is pretty harmful. suppose it depends how synical you are on these big companys actually changing or just wanting to look like they've changed!

I don't know about the ancient woodland issue but much of IKEA's stuff is softwood and the furniture industry is set up for anything but gnarly old ancient woodland stuff

I'm looking into the background of these claims.....theres alot to read. I think one of the issues was that swathes of Ancient Forest was purchased in Russia and razed to enable them to establish plantations.. They also had their licence from the FSC suspended.

Good on you for that. I honestly cant be bothered although for my part I am a born sceptic and these tails always have a bit of spin one way or the other.

Its a sad state of affairs but if they did it they wouldn't be the first, and probably not the last.

Sean, I will be interested to hear what you find. If 'Ancient Forest' is anything like 'Ancient Woodland' then it would mean a heavily managed environment, designed to grow a timber crop, so razing to the ground would not be incompatible with good management, but suspension of the FSC licence, if connected, would perhaps indicate a concern with the new management practice. Look forward to hearing more.
