I heard a lot of bad things about stihl 4mix engines but that was a while ago, and i wandered if they are still that bad? I need a new long handle hedge cutter and was going to go for a HL95 which is a 4mix so wanted to do a bit of research before i buy!

Cheers guys!

Apparently if you only use the stihl super oil and have it's serviced regularly it's fine. I'm still not touching them again after 2 km100's lasting barely lasting two years a piece.

Cheers what are you using instead then?

For a multi-tool system i'm now using the Echo and i'm very happy with it.

I will hopefully be salvaging my Stihl kombi-system accessories by switching the power unit to a FS70 as advised on Arbtalk recently.

But in general if I'm looking for new machines Stihl are no longer my first (or second) choice of brand.

For the price of the HL95 you could easily get the Echo multitool complete with trimmer attachment and then have the option of other attachments.

To be fair the Stihl attachments are easily the toughest around, and if you've got a few that's quite an investment which would not realise enough value if sold separately without an engine. Although I've used an Echo polesaw and liked it.

I've been very pleased with my two FS-70s. I've just this week sold them both for £140 a piece locally to a mate, and replaced them with two brand new ones at £276 a pop. That's akin to a fixed cost of £136 to have a new engine for a year, under warranty, to run the polesaw, garden strimmer, hedgecutter, tiller and edger. Works for me- I've not had to worry about a thing except petrol.

Cheers sounds like an idea, and just pop the hedge cutter head on in place of the strimmer head.

Whats the difference between the fs70 and fs94? they are both two stroke by the looks of things.
