Scary stuff that one. Your driving a 7.5t truck towing a 300 series on a pre 97 licence?. STOP!

Unless you've taken another bit of ticket, like wagon and drag, then your gross train is now 8.8t. a cool 450kgs over the limit. Therefore making the insurance invalid as well.

May have a solution, get yourself a Hilux 2515kg gross fitted with light ally tipping body, pay load of around 900kg, leaving you with 985kg for your chipper getting you to the 3500kg max before a tacho is required! If you had a 750kg chipper that would leave you with 235kg to mount a box on the chipper to carry your tools. :thumbup:

I am about to get an ally tipper fitted to the hilux. Problem here may be the hilux is rated to tow 2 tonne so is over the 3.5 tonne.

Does this count? I took this from the GB driver hours rules. Vehicles or combinations of vehicles with a maximum permissible mass not exceeding 7.5 tonnes that are used: • by universal service providers as defined in Article The only universal service provider in the UK at 2(13) of Directive 96/67/EC of the European the time of publication (September 2007) is the Royal Parliament and of the Council of 15 December 1997 Mail. Universal service provider vehicles must have a on common rules for the development of the internal tachograph fitted. market of community postal services and the improvement of quality service to deliver items as part of the universal service; or • for carrying materials, equipment or machinery This would apply to tradesmen such as electricians or for the driver’s use in the course of his work. builders carrying tools or materials for their own use. These vehicles shall be used only within a 50 km radius of the base of the undertaking and on the condition that driving the vehicle does not constitute the driver’s main activity.

If you are not exceeding a total train weight of 7500kg; lets say your transit 3500kg + chipper 1300kg within 30 miles of your home. Then I read this as you are not required to have a tachograph.?? Oh yes, I couldn't be bothered to read all 7 pages of posts so someone might have said this already!:biggrin:

In a word no.:thumbdown:

The exemption is for universal service provider(s)

The text you used is cut and pasted from a table or PDF and the formatting is all over the place.

I have relevant sentence out the appropriate sentence for you

The only universal service provider in the UK at the time of publication (September 2007) is the Royal Mail.

I shall copy the relevant bits this time!?!;

Derogations.

What say you now? or am I still way off the mark?

That might work if you only ever work within 50k and don’t carry anything but your tools and fuels.

you need a operators lisence if you have a van, but if you use a dual purpose vehicle ( ie 4x4) you dont need o lisence
