IMO, cavites and any wound should be left to the trees natual defense system to compartmentlise and heal, many arboricultre text will say to leave cavites alone, and that filling or drilling dranige holes should not be done, pruning paint also is not commonly used in modern arb.

If the decay is so bad and the tree seems to be a safety risk maybe removing the tree, grind the stump and replanting with a desirable species is a better arb praticise, and may give you more work and $$$$.

I ended up filling it with grout, and then another coat of pruneing paint over that to seal it.I did seriously consider foam but my Dad talked me out of it.

He says concrete is proven.Concrete adds density to the structure of the tree.He says,How do you know that foam is not toxic to the tree and make it sick or that it will not absorb moisture and cause decay, and that it adds less strength to the trees structure.Does anyone know any answers to these questions or can recommend a proven brand of foam(or filler).:confused1:

Dude!!

Please stop all this wound painting, cavity cleaning and filling and trust the tree to maximise its natural defences (wall 4 barrier zone) to stop the spread of decay.

Filling the cavity will not stop decay and stuff like concrete is poisonous, as detailed by other threads and is totally inflexible, the opposite of how a tree works!!!!

Finally mate, get a copy of Shigo 'Modern Arboriculture' and learn about the tree as a system.

Cheers dude
